Seems our African rain dance (you can read about it in my last blog post African Rain Dance), worked a treat …. the last fall of rain a few weeks back ran water into the creeks. Gentle rain is such a blessing.
February is peak grass growing season, and with the rain being right on cue, it’s certainly growing.
Although our rolling rainfall average is still sitting at 50% of our average, the grass bank is starting to build.
Faster grass growth in the growing season, means faster rotations through the paddocks. We’re keen to balance the ‘free’ summer feeds of grass with a healthy rest period for the pasture. At present our rest period is set at 60 days. The goal is to build a healthy feed inventory before the end of April and the change of season.
Regular shifts of cattle are providing ample opportunity to practice our drone flying skills.
It certainly gives us a bird’s eye view of what is going on with both animal behaviour and ground cover.
While at this stage battery life and distance from base are limiting factors for our drone, I can certainly see this technology being part of our future in the beef industry.
Like all good things in life, it’s about balance.
Living the life of a country kid certainly opens up plenty of fun opportunities, whether it be a drone, a secondhand bike or a day horseback. Each vehicle offers its benefits and drawbacks and hence the balance of doing what we love versus what we need versus what we want.
At the end of the day, life is pretty simple. And more often than not the simple things in life are the best. That’s February in a nutshell.
