Seems the torrential rain associated with a ‘big wet’ season is yet to arrive in this neck of the woods.
The showers we have had since Christmas have not made conditions muddy or run water in the creeks so our days are filled with ‘make hay while the sun shines’ kind of activities.
Many of our paddocks are reliant on one of two bores reticulating water through poly pipe to provide quality drinking water for stock. While we have telemetry monitoring key tank and trough levels, I’ve also incorporated a couple of water tanks to check on my morning run. Traffic isn’t much of a problem and while occasionally wet socks are a nuisance the grass seeds haven’t caused any issues either. Looking forward to grass seeds, boggy tracks and mud puddles being a problem, mind you!
Kids are all up to speed with the maintenance routine, particularly when we shift cattle into a fresh paddock.
Checking the perimeter fence and water supply are at the top of the list.
A fence and water run is all the more fun when you have driving lessons. After all, if you’re not big enough to open the gate, the least you can do is drive through the gate.
With the electric fencing project successfully working for just on two years now, we’ve begun splitting some more paddocks into smaller areas. The effectiveness (both labour and cost wise) to install the hot wire has made the electric fence a good business decision for us.
While maintaining fences and waters is of course critical, it’s also important to look after our people.
Hence a day trip to the beach was a very sound investment for the minds and bodies of all our stakeholders!
(and January seems filled with perfect beach weather)
Who could argue with a bakery breakfast and ocean swim at Emu Park.
Followed by a beach stroll for Mum while the kids built sandcastles.
It’s good to remind ourselves of the beautiful spaces a meagre 2 hour drive from our doorstep. When you have to make that trek to buy groceries why not also enjoy great fish and chips at Rosslyn Bay, a game of beach cricket and have some fun paddle boating at the Causeway?
While there is so many great things about growing up a country kid, it never does hurt to expand your horizons and try beach babe on for size.
