When people visit, they often comment on the veggie garden. More often than not, it is not the produce but the solid fence surrounding it….
My husband built that 😉
It successfully keeps out livestock including milkers, poddies, horses, wild pigs and mostly the rabbits.
Inspired by the permaculture theories, we’ve been creating soil that seems happy to grow things.
Eggplants and tomatoes seem very suited to it!
My recommendation to anyone wanting gratification in their veggie gardening adventure, is to plant an eggplant. They seem indestructible here.
We’ve also had a lot of success with our self seeded veggies.
Tomatoes, pumpkins, basil, coriander and eggplants seem to do this well and the self seeded variety seems a much sturdier and pest free plant.
A little while ago, in a visit to Bunnings, we purchased some seed potatoes. Three bags of seed potatoes. One bag for me and one bag for Rob and one bag for the kids.
Not one to shy from a challenge, we embarked on an “inhouse” potato growing contest.
Of course, I planted first in a mounded garden bed within the veggie enclosure.
Rob, some fortnight later, planted his in full sun, in a stack of old truck tyres, over near the chook enclosure. I think Rob planted the kids bag in the end.
We noticed the plants beginning to die off on my plot yesterday so I sent the kids in to dig. Boys love to dig…..
This is what they came in with. I was winning, for sure.
That was until they scratched around in Rob’s stack ….
Last night we enjoyed Warm Chorizo and Potato Salad for dinner.
It used up some of our eggs,
we added onion, rocket and beetroot leaves from the garden.
The chorizo came from Coles.
You had to be quick to get some ……
