This time of year, we see our cows a lot. We also see the steers, heifers, weaners, bulls and calves….
With the wet season arriving and being abundant (and I do sympathise for those it has seemed to elude..), pasture growth has been rapid. We rotational graze our pasture with the speed of the rotation, dependent on the rate of growth of the grass. Hence, in March, with the days still warm and plenty of moisture underfoot, the livestock have been “moving on” to the next paddock every few days.
With eight herds currently segregated and around 72 paddocks to move through, you can imagine why we’ve been on almost first name basis with many of these cows!
It is certainly not all hard work though, as the creeks have fallen back from raging torrents into gentle streams, tinkling along, crystal clear and so pristine.
They provide the perfect spot for refreshments….
and a welcome distraction from the mundane house chores that somebody has to do…..

I had one girl sweep out the hut yesterday voluntarily…and give the evil eye to fathers and uncles that came in with boots on. Now if only she would do the same here at home…

We rotational graze too, although with seasonal conditions being as they are, it changes the plan a bit. Your grass is looking so good it almost makes MY mouth water…
