Early this morning, these little troopers shuffled over to the horse yards as the sun came up for there were cattle to muster before school. Another day, another expedition for the horse and her boy…
First step is the bridle, which is quite the challenge when your horse is taller than you.
With the reins around the horses neck to prevent an escape, the trick is the persuade the horse to take the bit in their mouth.
Or, you can sweet talk Superdad into doing it for you…
Next comes the saddlecloth,
and you always pay careful attention to make sure it’s square, the perfect foundation for the saddle.
The last step is to do up the girth, using plenty of elbow grease to make sure it’s nice and tight.
Notice Lachlan’s wishful stance in the background?!
He is waiting for Superdad to finish…
So that he can do his heavy lifting, under careful instruction of course!
Little hands are eager to help out with the big jobs.
 Dad offers a little guidance
suggesting a bit more leverage.
With horses saddled up they are set for the muster down the paddock.
Best trot along now, we have to be home in time for school!

Love the look of resigned acceptance on Andrew’s horse’s face. You need an early start just to get saddled up don’t you!

looks like they might have even got a bit damp…no sign of moisture up here today.

as a kid I had an old horse that used every trick in the book – head up high, gritted teeth, puffing themselves up

and yes, saddling up for the kids is almost a days work in itself.
