Imagine travelling 7 hours to attend a school’s inter house athletics carnival? Many families gathering in Rockhampton today for the CSDE Sports day, did just that.
While we didn’t have to journey that far to attend, a 4.30am start was still required so that we could present for the 7.45am march past. The opportunity to see their friends and teachers mixed with a bit of team spirit was enough to motivate young bodies out of their snuggly beds in this house.
A cappuccino for me on hitting town was enough to keep me smiling as we launched into the field events. One of the disadvantages of Distance Education is the sparse opportunities to be exposed to sporting techniques and training. Take long jump for example, quite often a prep or Year 1 child’s first exposure to such an event is watching the kid in front of you on the day.
By Year 3, you’re starting to get the hang of it though!
The bigger kids competed in the full suite of events. Andrew started his day with the 800 metres ……
…… before he launched into the high jump.
Adelaide learnt a few new skills today, including how to put the shot-put albeit a modified one.
She also mastered the high jump.
Her efforts in the 50 metre sprint were rewarded with a blue ribbon.
Blue ribbons always seem to make the Dad’s in the crowd smile.
So much of today’s sports event was about catching up with your mates, what ever the age and regardless of their team colour.
It really is a great family day out. The efforts of so many people to bring a school community as spread out and diverse as our’s certainly doesn’t go unnoticed. And they do it all for the kids!
