It’s been pretty dry around here lately ….. means that checking water for the cows regularly is critical as there’s no surface water.
I noticed the jets were leaving streams in the air the other day. This pleased Mum and Dad as they commented about moisture building in layers.
At this time of year, the cows are having their calves. It means that when we move the cows into a fresh paddock, we have to be extra careful that all the calves keep up with their Mum’s and we don’t leave any behind under bushes or in clumps of grass. Sometimes Dad leaves the gate open so that the cows will go back and collect their babies. Often a little calf, who has lost his Mum in the crowd, will follow our horses until his Mum finds him again.
Mum and Dad were ecstatic when the first storms of the season rolled in. The storms were angry, with lots of wind, lightening and thunder.
Dad tipped 95mm of rain (or liquid gold) as he calls it, out of the gauge over the course of a week.
Mum had a few extra loads of washing to do as we all jumped puddles and made mud cakes.
Everyone was super surprised to see we’d had enough rain to put a trickle in the headwaters of the creek.
While we love our swimming pool, there’s nothing quite like exploring creeks.
The grass has bounced out of the ground and I think green is our new favourite colour.
A while ago two of our hens went clucky. When we collected the eggs each afternoon, we’d have to fight the hens to gather eggs from underneath her. Dad suggested we leave the two hens on their eggs and see what happened. Imagine how surprised we were yesterday when we discovered one hen had four little chicks and the other five in their nest!
They’re the cutest things ever and love a green pick too.
Today we head to town to collect Andrew from boarding school. Mum has packed our Sunday best as we’re going on for a mini break to the big smoke. Dad is looking at some cows on the way so we’re driving. Ten hours in the car! Good thing we’ve downloaded the Harry Potter Audiobooks.
We’ve got to hustle back as we’ve still got a little bit of school to do. Only 10 more days until our school holidays start.
I can’t wait till then, Dad said that we will need our horses for the first job on the holidays
…. we’re putting the bulls out for the season.
